Hi,
On an adjacent allotment to mine which has not been cultivated for about five years with the weeds head high,though the rent has been paid, there was a plastic pond installed.
The water was filthy and lots of plants had fallen in to the water!
Anyway someone had put a spade though the bottom of the plastic and when I looked all the water had drained away!
I found two goldfish covered in mud but still alive, so I rescued them and put them in a water butt!
They are thriving now, nice little fish!
As I never have had goldfish before, having purchased some fish food for them, when they take some of it, in a few seconds the spit it out again!
Is this normal or what?

From what I know of fish, I keep tropicals, they suck food in and spit it out quite a lot before they actually eat it.

My OH's fish do the same, I think they take little bits off each time they suck it in. My father in law always rubs the flakes between his fingers to break it up before he feeds his goldfish.

Just be careful if we get a really cold snap, the water butt does not freeze solid.
I have seen fish live in them and survive, will grow fat in summer on mosquito larvae.
Goldfish are also messy feeders and poo a lot... :)

Tomato plants love a bit of goldfish water ! ;)
