Broody Hen Introduction
« on: March 12, 2011, 06:11 »
Hi All

Ok I have a broody hen that is due to hatch her first clutch Sunday/Monday (fingers, toes crossed) my question is how long do I leave her with the new chicks before moving her back into the main coop ??

What chicks hatch are going on a trip to Nottinghamshire to live with my Mother(Dad not yet informed of our plan but then again he is always last to find out, he woke up one morning to find a goat in the orchard!!) sorry went off on one there any help or advice would be appreciated

The Eggs are copper/blue Moran so i was informed , i tried to candle them but my homemade device did not do as i thought it would well that and the fact that the eggs are that dark brown i dont think i could of seen through anyway.

Once again thanks in advance
3 girls .............very addictive these girls are becoming

Mum usually stays with her chicks for about 6-7 weeks, she will let you know when it's time to put her back in the main coop by ignoring her chicks and wanting to be with the other hens.

if you are intending to send the chicks as day olds or just after .i would remove the chicks your sending in the dark and leave a couple ,box the remaining chicks and keep them warm and make sure they have water and chick crumb, when the hen wakes up in the morning she wont be any the wiser and should just get on with caring for the remainder. dont leave the travelling chicks to long before moving them to the new home ( suitably set up for chicks ),make sure they have food and water . a clean sponge in the container will stop it swilling about and they will still be able to drink.
still alive /............

Should the broody and chicks be in view of the rest of the flock?

I have my broodies in full view if the others, but then again I let my broody and chicks out after a few days. Also I have had them hatch in the hedgerow so no choice there  ::)
Staffies are softer than you think.
