Mine went in around mid April this year.

http://growingyourownveg.blogspot.com/2009/04/worth-wait.html

I've got twenty crowns.  Two beds of early and two beds of late harvest so I should get a decent season in a couple of years.

All my plants are from Canadian stock.  As they are all males and F1 I’ve got no chance of seeds.
Every plant now has at least one thin stringy stem with a fern on top.  Some are over two feet tall and some are only five or six inches tall.

Perhaps Trillium can advise us on Canadian stock .... but mine were bought froma professional asparagus grower  and they are "Gnelph Millenium (I think thats what it says!!!!)"

How do you know/tell the difference between male and female crowns, or do you have to wait for them to grow and judge by the thickness of the stems and whether they flower?

Mine too are now all branching out - exciting isn't it?

"whether they flower?"

I think that's it.  If grown from seed you can ditch those - if you want to, you  don't HAVE to :) although it would be wise to remove tops after flowering, and before seeding, each year.

I'm thinking about offering any of my seedlings, that turn out to flower, on eBay :D

Surely both sexes flower and it's only the berries that give it away, unless you're a real expert.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm still no further forward on this one, but seen some lovely and unexpected picic on the net of red berries - so hopefully looking forward to a mid summer Christmas :)

Guess I'll just have to see what happensand reap the rewards if it does....unless anybody out there knows differently

p.s. I'm being a pedantic pain here aren't I? I should wait and see what happens and try not to kill anything in the process....
