Onions for storing
« on: November 15, 2012, 15:41 »
I have just realised the hard way that over winter onions don't store well.  My question is do I sow the storing variety from seed or sets in the spring and if from seed what varieties are the best?

The answer is either.

You may find sets easier if you're just starting out.

My current favourite is "Centurion".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Our over-wintered onions that we dug up in May stored quite well and we have only just used the last of them

They do store a bit, just not as long as spring sown ones

If you want more variety go for onions from seed. I grew sweet spanish this year and they are so mild you can almost eat them like fruit!

Onions from seed are not really much more of a faff than sets and they tend to be much less prone to bolting.

Sunshineband, if they store for that long there will be no problem at all using them up :)

I keep reading good things about growing them from seed and intend to have ago this year :)

If you are still talking about overwintering (Japanese) onions, I'm afraid you've left it too late for this year - it's a small sowing window from mid-August to 1st week in September though I'd highly recommend the earlier sowing to be sure they germinate before the cold weather stops growth.  I can definitely give a thumbs up to growing Senshyu Yellow from seed

Eblana it will soon be time to sow the spring planting onions you were wanting to grow though, so

...seeds at the ready  :D :D

(inside though, not straight into the ground: that's not for some months yet  ;) )

Thanks everyone - I have just gotten a brand new greenhouse so I think I will give the seeds a go and see how I do, sure if they don't work out I can always go and get some sets later :)

Have planted a lot of Winter Onions, so a little concerned with the comments about them not storing well.  How long would you say they would store?

Last year froze my excess overwintered onions by slicing and open freezing on trays. Worked well for many dishes.

I had to use the last of mine off this week as they were starting to go mushy at the neck.  I have no maincrop ones so will have to buy them from now till next May/June.  Next year I will have a combination of both types to see me more or less through the year.
