Grapes in a PT?
« on: October 29, 2014, 20:01 »
HI

After just harvesting about 6 large bunches of grapes from a vine in an old small greenhouse that's been neglected I think I'll get a vine for the PT.

Can anyone recommend a dessert variety?

Also is there a danger with a vine of damage to the plastic cover?  I know how vigorous they can be.

TIA

Black Hamburgh or for a white madeleine angevine but as you say I would be very worried about damage to the cover
Im sure there is another recent post on this somewhere , try a search

There is - not that much additional info about PT growing but every little helps:

Hi, I grow Black Hamburgh in my PT and I've not had any issues with any damage to the cover. I grow mine along a plastic coated wire that runs up and down the tunnel about a foot below the top and about a foot either side of the centre. I,ve ordered another variety this year for my other tunnel,(can't think of the name)and it's going in this November, I'll let you know the results.

sonnycbr , that's good info . I have grown them in glasshouses but never plastic . I will put them back on my wish list for when I increase polytunnel size

@sonnycbr

Have you planted it outside and trained in or is it planted inside?

TIA

Mine is planted inside the tunnel, it's doing really well. I've seen other vines planted outside and trained through openings, in fact I remember my grandfather did just that with his vine. I don't know the pros and cons either way, but indoors works for me.

Thanks Sonnycbr!

Mine will go into a raised bed in the PT then.  I have read somewhere about them needing 'vernalising' but if I can get away without damaging the PT that's the way to go.
