Stump grinder-advice
« on: August 12, 2007, 10:01 »
Having chopped down 20 trees from our garden(just moved in-all overgrown 30-50ft high) i now have the stumps to get rid of, how near to the ground do i have to cut the stumps to? stumpbusters want just under £900inc vat to rid us of them-Hss about £150 to hire.
I cant really drill them and let them rot as i would like the patch where they are is a veg plot next year.
Cheers
Ray

why not dig a pit around each stump - and burn them down. it works for my dad - he has a small patch of woodland and has been using this method for years.

the ashes wil be good in your veggie plot too

Its a bit of a built up area around here and most of the stumps are right next to a fence(not mine either).
There are a few that are mid garden that i will do that to, thanks

sorry shaun i ignored your question, they were all conifer types, they had been let get too big by the last owner and blocked views of at least 4 other houses.
i may drill some of them and put sweet stuff in the holes- jam etc - i dont want to use diesel but i have heard that kills and helps them rot.

You can apply a solution of urea which greatly accelerates decomposition. http://solutions.psu.edu/Horticulture_Gardening_Landscaping_747.htm

Last time we cut loads down, we left them as bare trunks about 5' high. This gives you plenty of leverage to rock them out, dig all around, tie thick rope to one and use the next one along as a pulley. Was not too bad. we had 10 to take out and the trunks where about 6"-9" across.

hi

richy has the right idea..  but as they are now down your best option is to hire a stump grinder, but please take the size of the machine into consideration before it is delivered and wont fit through your garden gate.  these machines aren't for the faint hearted and if you want to plant you are going to have to take it well below ground level.  this wont be much of a job with conifers as there root system is pretty much like a big ball.

good luck and take some pics to post on here

cheers

hey up ray the best way is to dig em up and be done with it,
2 ways to do it
1 by hand (pay someone else to do it)
2 hire a 1.5 ton mini digger for the day it will cost around £100 in a few hours they will be history,
like JRT says theres no big roots just a mass of small roots
