Some varieties do have tougher skins, as they were bred for the supermarket trade  :(
Weather can also make it more noticeable  ;)

Its probably the variety (paste tomatoes like Roma and San Marzano have thicker skins) but also the speed with which they ripen and how ripe you let them get (if they're really ripe and soft to the touch the skins will feel thinner).

I find Shirleys a bit too tough for me. Or at least they were last year so I didnt grow them again

Haven't grown Red Pear for a few years (I found they had tough skins and weren't especially tasty) but Gardener's Delight should be OK (but mine aren't ripe yet).

Some of my outdoor tomatoes seem to have thicker skins than normal (sweet pea currant for example) but the greenhouse varieties seem to be OK.

Don't know - are they fully ripe?

I nearly always seem to agree with Mum and today is no different!
Having recently discovered (in the hows everyones toms thread)  there are over 2000 tomato varieties, the more common ones (those more recently produced for the supermarket for long shelf life) will not be grown by me next year.
I'm risking thinner skinned heritage ones for taste.

My gartenperle toms have a reasonable skin but great taste so will do those again ;) :)

A lack of sufficient water can cause tomatoes to develop thick skins and so can high temperatures.

back to the weather again  ::)

I have a good fall-back when anything goes wrong, that I can't blame on a pest or a disease - blame it on the weather
More often than not it is the reason  ;)

It is not for lack of watering, I think maybe it was the very hot weather. The gardeners delight were worse than the red pear.  Now the sun is not so fierce the toms that I am picking are much nicer with skins that are not too tough.
