compost bin
« on: October 21, 2013, 11:34 »
Hi I have made a compost bin which is 5'x4' and made of iron  profile sheets and wondered if is best to have it covered or leave it open at the top.

I'd cover it. You can make a lid or use folded up tarp as a "blanket" to keep the heat in  :)

I would cover it too. It will love being tucked in nice and warm.  :)

Until you (might) make another bin or two for throughput - first off make sure your composting material's thoroughly moistened all through - then cover it - the old style felt carpet underlay is good, then something waterproof (heavyish) resting on top of the bin (more iron sheet?  but make sure the wind can't get underneath it.)

(I was about to eulogize away there for a minute but... ) If you love gardening it's fantastic when you first turn out a bin of fully finished compost - I learned how: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Composting-The-Organic-Natural-Way/dp/072251588X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382389373&sr=8-3&keywords=dick+kitto (less than the price of a pint...)

I've used pallets for the sides of the bins, and put corrugated metal sheets as a  roof ,slightly sloping with an old bath at the lower end to catch the rainwater, weighted down with bricks to stop it blowing away .

old carpet makes a good cover

I know this is a popular covering, but I tend to avoid it now, since I found out that toxins from the dyes can leach out and into the compost.

I use thick black polythene weighted down with planks of wood. Seems to do the job  :D

I use cardboard to top mine off with, it acts as a blanket and what's left come spring goes in to the next bin.
