Is there a best time to get layers?

We'll be getting 3 hybrids soon. Had them before but going to build better house and run this time. I did wonder if there's a better time to get them though. I expect it will be March before the house is ready.

If they are pol still may be a while before they produce though. Hybrids usually start to lay younger than pure breeds. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

March is an excellent time of year to get them.  If they are POL, every chicken that is capable of laying should be laying very well by the end of March.  If not, it's likely they will not be that stellar of a layer anyway.

POL covers a great age range - it all depends on the seller. Some will say a 14 week old bird is POL and others say a 22 week old bird is. A lot depends on the breed - pure breeds tend to lay later and often not lay until they are 35 weeks whereas an egg laying hybrid can lay at 17 weeks.
However dont despair if you have to wait until 35 weeks for an egg because all hens will lay a similar amount of eggs over their lifetime and are hatched with these already inside them (they are on a sort of tape and they will grow into eggs in time) and pure breeds will carry onto their old age still laying. Hybrids generally will lay about 6/7 eggs a week for a few years and a pure breed about 4/5 a week for more years.

question
layers or a mix of corn and layers?
