Rotavating the plot - technique?
« on: March 19, 2013, 11:29 »
This might be a silly question, but now I have nearly got the plot dug over, I'm beginning to think about getting the tiller out when the weather improves, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right. By that, I mean, make sure I am not destroying all my hard work with the rough digging.

What's the best way of rotavating it?  Do I use wooden boards to walk on, doing a bit at a time then moving them to ensure I don't damage the soil structure? or does it not matter?

EDIT: And is it worth doing the whole plot, or should I just do the rows I intend to sow?

I start in the middle of the bed (I have square beds) and rovivate in a spiral from the centre out to the edges. That way, I can walk on the untillered soil as I go round. Then I get the boards out to walk on when raking.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I don't have "beds" as such.  I have a rectangular plot, and will be planting in rows.  Would I be better using boards in between rows, and rotavating the areas I will be planting, or should I still do the sections between rows too?

I guess it's up to you really, I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it. My feeling would be to just do the whole lot in one go - probably take no more time than the stop/starting between rows  :)
