Damp Blood, Fish and Bone (BFB)
« on: November 22, 2015, 14:03 »
I've just checked the shed and found the cardboard box holding my BFB is damp/wet.  If I scatter the BFB on the ground now will the goodness have been leached out by the time it comes to plant out?

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I'd say yes, if you mean spring planting.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I put mine on the compost heap when that happens (surprisingly frequently!)  ::)

That's a splendid way to deal with these situations, Mum!

I do the same with Phostrogen and any other stuff which gets silly!

I think this happens frequently, a symptom of the Great British damp shed! I put my fertilisers in an airtight container, and label with contents, Npk, dosage etc.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

I had that problem in my shed Kleftiwallah, so I now do what oldgrunge does. 4pint milk containers usually do the trick. I write all necessary info on the side with permanent pen. Works a treat!

Wait until next year and spread it out on metal trays in the greenhouse, that's how I dry out my coffee grounds

Perhaps you could spread it out on a metal tray and put it in a warm oven. Make sure Mrs. Kleftiwallah doesn't catch you!

Have to say I have exactly the same problem with condensation dripping onto one of my boxes of BFB and such a simple solution oldgrunge! I now have the radiators covered in rinsed out plastic milk bottles and screen wash bottles, the latter by the way are much sturdier and have better cap seals, drying out ready for a rescue mission in the morning.

Would you  dry homemade compost right out before you used it ?

It will be fine to use next year , just harder to sprinkle.

If you dry out any powder feed you shouldn't lose any nutrients as all you are doing is removing the water content.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It is a slow release fertiliser so its nutrients aren't easily leached away, although being an organic product it could invite mould growth if it stays wet, although hopefully not so much in winter.

I'd do what Cadalot suggests if possible - the stink from trying to dry it in the oven would be more than even I could bear!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

The mould growth will be what slow releases the nutrients, if it does get a bit smelly it will not be any worse than what comes out of the blunt end of most organic fertiliser producers. :)
