Title: new washing machine
Post by: azubah on July 14, 2017, 16:59
Can anyone recommend a simple washing machine without lots of complicated electronics and difficult to set programmes?
Our old one has just one knob which we turn and pull out, and that's the sort we want.

I've got a basic Zanussi which just has a dial you turn to the programme you want, plus a few extra buttons which are actually very useful - variable temperature settings, spin speed and a super quick wash option.  I don't think the exact model I have is still available but having had a quick internet trawl, the cheaper models they do now look very similar.

Its been a reliable machine and I'd buy another one  :)  I hate over complex machines as well  ;)

I can't recommend one but I can certainly warn against one - I have a budget indesit and it's the worst thing I've bought.  >:(

It doesn't wash properly so everything has to be done twice and doesn't use enough water to rinse leaving soap marks all over dark clothes, I have to do an extra rinse cycle.   :(  Really energy and water efficient

Thanks, New Shoot and Lardman.
We did have a Zanussi a few years ago which lasted very well.
We had a hoover, which lasted 5 years.
The one we have now was over 20 years old when we moved in here and is sounding a little rough, but has served us for a couple of years.

Try a Bosch, on ours you turn the knob to the temp required, (40 degrees 99% of the time) and press the button, finished. Actually one doesn't press the button just rest your finger against it.

i would go for bosch or zanussi, our hotpoint takes an hour for a 45 min wash!!!
Try looking on AO site as the prices are good

Got a new hotpoint  had them for years , lots of easy progs from 30 min 30°. Spin time will account for extra time on the wash.

I use the extra 14 min spin cycle a lot as it cuts drying time .

Had a Zanussi ZWF12070W for 11 years.
Would well recommend. It gets used at least four or five times every week and works as new with not one glitch.
Easy to use and does a great wash.
Have always loved the sports shoes mode for your gardening shoes.

Ours is a basic Beko 71642 which is 5 years plus old and still trundling on. It came from AO.  Also check co-op electrical online, they were great for freezers.   I like the variable spin speed and temperature and quick wash options, but in reality we aren't heavy users (3 or 4 loads a week maybe) and I perhaps use maybe 4 combos for most things.  It will take a double duvet though to wash which is great for my mum.   :)  A wash cycle in her admittedly 10 year old Zanussi takes forever and the load size is limited.

I would choose something simple with as big a drum as you can get - it improves the washing, the rinsing (sorry lardman) and copes with the occasional big item like duvets and sleeping bags etc.

At Hamster Towers the 15 year old Zanussi washer dryer gave up the ghost Tuesday.  After second load of the day shaken and tumbled (towels) and as it finished there was a loud popping, a guff of smoke from the back gushing out from under the worktop and the appetising smell of burned circuit boards.  Not good.

Possibly repairable - they'd take it away for a week or ten days, replace parts if they can get them for this obsolete machine and at the end of it I would have a fifteen year old repaired machine, ready for the next thing.  No longer make that model (or I would unhesitatingly buy another the same) so had to bit the bullet and replaced with a modern Samsung.  Ludicrous price and users manual that is possibly the work of a non-native English speaker!

Ought instead to beat the clothes on stones by the banks of the Wharfe....

One thing I have noticed is that words like Zanussi and 10 years, 15 years, 20 years keep coming up. That must be significant.

But to get a good machine you need to buy a 15 or 20 year old model ! ;)

I know a lady who worked in the Zanussi customer care department (aka complaints) for a while but could not handle the volume of work ! :nowink:

Thanks, 8doubles.
It seems to me that it could be a good idea to buy the cheapest and just replace it when it goes bang.
I could get 2 or 3 cheap ones for the price of an expensive one.

That was my logic - not very green, but the gamble that an expensive one was going to be that  much better, seemed to come with awfully high odds to me.

Yes, an expensive one is just as likely to go bang as a cheap one...

Don't forget you may need to get rid of the old one...

We got ours from Tesco online - dead easy, and they took the old kit!

It was just over £230.00 for a Hotpoint 'Aquarius', and after setting the digital dials, it's a simple operation each time. Does take a long time though but the quick cycle is fine for us two old fogeys...

Like you. we'd forget maintenance contracts, they're a waste of money!

I don't do maintenance contracts.
Washers are easy to get rid of round here as we have scrap merchants round all the time.
You just push anything metal out the door and it will disappear in minutes.

My nearly 10 years old Indesit has just died  :(

In the past I've bought multi-programme machines from Hotpoint & Hoover and they both only had a 3 year lifespan, which is why I bought the Indesit. You can't seem to get very basic models any more, as I go by the 'more different functions - more to go wrong' school of thought  ::)
As I can't replace like for like, I've decided on a cheapo Beko ECO ordered from ao for free Saturday delivery, and they will take the old one away.

Fingers crossed it lasts at least 2 years!

Hubby's Saturday job though uni was in the electrical store dept of John Lewis - and the brand always recommended is Miele. Yes they are much more expensive and I was a cynic.. until we got one. It is so quiet, energy efficient and does a great job at not creasing the clothes! They also come with a 10 year guarantee. Even the man who came to fit it for us said he would only choose Miele and he has had his over 20 years!

We've just bought a Miele dishwasher as well in the hope we won't need to replace them for a very long time now

Just a word of warning - after a rather costly experience this weekend. Check the warranty on the items you're buying VERY carefully, not only does the length vary by manufacturer but also from the supplier you buy from.

I bought ML a £350 Zanussi dryer from AO.com 19 months ago, it failed over the weekend. Phoning zanussi I find it only has 12 months warranty and they won't help. If I'd have purchased from John Lewis it would have had 24 months as standard and I could have had it repaired or replaced.

I now have a very expensive paper weight and a hoover machine on order with JL.

There used to be a consumer rights clause on the guarantees that stipulated a cost to guarantee length .
Might be worth a check !

We're really looking at the cost of new Hoovers and similar, and saying to each other 'Why bother with the concern of it going wrong, it's only four or five lunches down the pub these days, and zod the insurance thingys'.

Not great economics, but it makes life somewhat easier and we sleep well.

Can't really afford to chuck money in all directions, but these big companies are only big because they rip you off, so do it all on your own terms, think of England and don't worry too much!

Blimes, I can remember when we used to RENT a television...
