What is eating seedlings
« on: January 31, 2018, 12:40 »
I was just out checking my seedlings for early tomato experiment and some chard seedling which I had sown.  I thought that the only tomatoes to germinate were the Roma but I have discovered that some of the others have as well but something has eaten the leaves off them and the chard are all the same😡😡😡.   I don’t think it is slugs at this time of year and I can’t see any evidence of them. Any other suggestions?

I’m sure it will be slugs, I take it said seedlings are in the greenhouse, if it’s warm enough for growth it’s warm enough for slugs, check under the pots etc, perhaps put some slug pellets down or beer traps, or go our in the dark with a torch,I’m sure you’ll find some.

You do get slugs at this time of year. I have seem them in the soil even after a cold spell with hard frosts. the winter so far has also been mild.

Depends where you are, we've had sub-zero night temps more often than not here this winter! Admittedly, not stopped the evil slug menace though  ;)

It's probably slugs, but I once had a very mischievous mouse who used to sneak into my greenhouse and munch the tops of my seedlings. He left no signs, and if I hadn't caught him in the act I wouldn't have believed it!

I have put down blue pellets of death😜. I also went yesterday and bought a mouse trap as I noticed some soil disturbance in the seed tray of the first onion seed that I sowed (couldn’t make up my mind whether it was when I was watering or a mouse rooting around but with hindsight it is possible a mouse).

It is mice.  Have caught two so far and thankfully now have leaves left on seedlings which have germinated.

So far I have caught 5 mice, I can't find a nest or even where they are getting in.  There seems to be no activity during the day so I presume they are getting in somehow at night probably attracted by the heat (I have a 8x3 ft heated sand bench in there so it is nice and toasty).  None of my peas or sweet peas have germinated so I am assuming that they have snaffled the seeds somehow but there is no sign of the compost being disturbed.

On a different scale   -   my over-winter Aquadulce broad beans have been looking good, up until the last few days. Now they are looking decidedly ragged, and that part of my allotment is covered in what I'm guessing are Muntjac deer tracks (are they called 'slots', I seem to remember or mis-remember from my enthusiastic wildlife reading some 60 years ago?).
So I shall have to rig up some kind of improvised anti-deer defences....
