Cats dropping!
« on: February 26, 2015, 21:09 »
4 months ago i moved house and i (thought) was lucky enough to have room for just under a quarter of an allotment in my new back garden. Seems my allotment is now 4 miles away i decided to give my lotty up scale down and use my garden.
Unfortunately my new home is right in the middle of a housing estate and even tho its got a secluded garden the estate cats seem to think my little lotty is a quality toilet! and to make matters worse so does my own cat lol. Im gutted, dont know what to do.
I dug my rhubarb crowns up last week before i handed the key over , dug a new area up in my garden planted them and the local cats thought great a new toilet.

Please help.....if possible.

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Chicken wire?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If it's any consolation, they only seem to use my garden beds when they're freshly dug - once the earth settles down and something is growing, they find somewhere else to go.

Good thick layer of wood chips might help.  Until then, good hand washing and safe handling of the veggies before eating.

Chilli powder. I get mine by the huge bag full at the Chinese cash and carry.

You need to keep topping it up especially if it rains.

I did try sticking wooden kebab sticks points upwards and criss crossing bamboo sticks and old twigs but the little dears pood on top of those.

There was a program on TV not so long ago about the secret lives of cats where a lady was plagued with this and an expert came in and set up heat sensitive water sprays which seemed to do the trick.

Having three cats myself I know what a problem it can be especially when you have just dug over the soil. As MOS says, they tend not to bother too much after it has settled. The only other thing you could try is placing used citrus peel on top of dug soil as they don't like the smell. I also suspend clematis netting over my newly-planted veg beds and surround small newly-planted plants with a circle of the same netting supported by canes. I'm lucky not to have any nearby neighbours as I would hate my cats to be a nuisance to them in that way.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have the same problem off and on , i saw an idea i use which is using old tea bags and spreading or spraying menthol, eucalyptus onthe tea bag and put it just under the soil surface , i just put on the top so i can see if desturbed,  it worked last year , i just saw a cat poo in the middle of a big thyme plant i had to cut it out, i dont use the plant i may have to pull it up now its got a chunk out of it .

I have 4 mogs and they all poo in their own garden ::)

They do like freshly dug soil. They don't tend to poo among plants - only fresh loose soil ;) :)
You can buy Lion poo which is supposed to frighten them off the garden - my 4 have never seen a lion though, so not sure how that works ???

I presume there is a stronger scent/pheromone marker from a big cat - so presume the smaller cats go elsewhere

I've heard that rose cuttings (or, I suppose, anything prickly) are quite effective.   :)

I've taken to netting my onion/garlic bed now, as my son (and his cat Jasper) are currently staying with me.  Just need to find a way of stopping him from getting the clips off... ::)
