Sow now advice from Franchi Seeds of Italy
« on: July 14, 2015, 09:21 »
I just received an email from them......................

Quote
Cavolo nero kale, cauliflowers, cabbage, pac choy, mizuna, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, chard, fennel of Parma and Montebianco, lettuce, chicory, radicchio, radish, angelica, watercress, fenugreek, agretti, Parisier carrots, onion, Hamburg parsley, turnip, broccoli raab, spigarielli Neapolitan broccoletti, salsify, tetragonia and baby spinach Emilia, endive, escarole, basil, parsley, rocket, borage, cat grass, lavender, lemon balm, origano, rosemary, sage, marjoram, thyme and many flowers.

That's quite a list for anybody with space  :D and a reminder to me to check my Autumn sowing seeds before I forget  ::)

Fennel here too -- I thought it was getting a bit late but clearly not  :D

Radishes for sure now the weather has cooled down a little bit

Spinach if I can find space

More water cress as the rest has gone to seed now

Thanks for the list --no mention of beetroot though?

I always sow fennel about now, following the garlic. If sown earlier in the year fennel tends to bolt.

I love fennel but haven't grown it before because it seems to need a lot of water and I have free-draining soil and due to work I can only get to the plot to water at best twice per week. I would love to try it (and have free seeds from a magazine) but in these circumstances and given the current very dry weather here, would those of you who are fennel growers suggest I try it?

In about 5 Fennel growing attempts I've had nothing usable, which is probably partly due to my free-draining soil, and also either sowing too early (bolting) or too late (not enough time to develop proper 'bulbs'.)

You never know, the weather might be more Fennel-friendly this year, and your seeds were free (I paid for mine but I'm still trying again in the next day or so!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Free seeds: what's to lose?

Some years we have good fennel bulbs, sometimes weeny, and it always seems a challenge. Even the teensiest crop gives us something for a roast chicken "trivet" though  :D

I don't water mine as it's out on the plot. It does fine  :)

How can I not give it a go after those comments, then? Ok I've put the seeds in my plot rucksack and will give it a go  :D. Fingers crossed.
