Planting hyacinths in the garden
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:46 »
I've had some hyacinths in a pot flowering roud Christmas for a couple of years and want to put them in the garden.

Anyone any advice on when to do this? Now?

Thanks

Just stuff them in.

We've done that for years and have loads in the back garden.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, I thought it was probably as easy as that - thanks!  ;)

I agree. My Mum had some once and put them in a place where nothing grew properly, thinking that was the end of them, but they came up every year and when she sold the house three had grown to thirteen. Well worth doing.

I asked the same question about crocus bulbs a couple of weeks ago one suggestion was plant them now ,the other was to let them dry indoors and plant out in september.I've planted them now.

Mine are pretty dry in the pot due to lack of watering  ::) so I'm putting them in - thanks all.

The flower comes a little straggly looking the first year as it's no doubt been in bulb compost with little nutrient. Over the next couple of years it'll regain it's strength.

When I plant out my potted bulbs, I first add a good handful of blood, fish and bonemeal to the hole so the bulbs get a good boost to recover.
