Last year I planted some raspberry canes 2 ft apart.
So far so good.
But it looks like some new canes are now growing in between the old ones. I am sure that they are the same plant as they are really similar to my original canes.
I do no understand because all I did was to prune the old canes.
Does anyone have a theory?
What should I do?

Just putting up new cane to fruit on next year.  They fruit on the previous year's canes.

You have done nothing wrong. Raspberries sent out suckers (like underground runners) and shoot from these. Over time your neat rows of canes will become higgl-de-piggldy (spread all over). It is their natural habit.

I put mine in a separate cordoned off bed to try and contain them a little, but they still try and escape!! I find the Autumn fruiting varieties are much worse for this than the earlier varieties.

how late can you plant raspberries and will they stand heat, and are they any good in big pots

If they are the Autumn variety, what is being thrown up now will bear you this year's fruit.
