courgette leaves turning brown
« on: June 18, 2011, 14:38 »
About a week ago the 'oldest' courgette leaves on some of my plants turned completely yellow. The courgettes are a yellow variety that I have not grown before so I thought maybe it was normal  ::)

Now however the leaves have developed brown patches that are joining up and the leaves are curling in at the edges which are also brown.

This is neither normal or good. Can anyone help with what is going wrong and what I should do. They are growing close to my normal green courgettes which are not suffering the same fate....yet.

This happened with mine last year. it didn't effect the plants in any way. i think its just natural that they go brown and drop off, i guess its the plant's way of staying in good health!  :)

Wow that sounds hopeful, thank you!  I was expecting doom and gloom.

I've had this happen to courgettes, pumpkins and butternut squash this year. It seem to coincide with a dip in temperature that I think the oldest leaved couldn't cope with.

I just cut them off an the rest of the plants are fine.

is it like this? - http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=79115.0
My courgettes had something similar when they were inside, I just cut the leaves off and they are outside now and seem much happier.

Not really Squowse.
The leaves first go entirely yellow, the veins being the last to loose their green. Once this has happened the areas between the veins then go brown .

It probably is just normal, but what fertiliser did you put down before / at planting, and what feeding are you using now?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are in large containers of my home made compost and as they have no sign of flowers yet I haven't  started feeding them.

I was intending to use miracle grow later ( I need to use up some slightly damp stuff)

They were out when we had that 4C night but covered with fleece so I guess it was the cold.

( ps the 'pathclear' has been nowhere near them  ::) !!!)

The cold may well have been the main culprit - 4* really is far too cold for them (they will sulk under 10*C).

However, I also suspect they may be starving.  Home made compost will have very few nutrients.  I'd add some fertiliser, chicken pellets or something that will take a bit of time to break down.  The thing about liquid feed is that it gives an instant hit but isn't long-lasting.

I thought that you had to keep courgettes starving to get them to produce well.

My old gardening book includes severe water rationing as well though the heavens have intervened this year.

Have I got it wrong?
