beware if yer lotty is in a frost pocket!

I'm near the bottom of a shallow valley - this collects cold air on still nights at this time of year. Out of interest, I put a digital max/min thermometer in the shed. Its external sensor pokes outside, on the end of a 3 metre wire. They're not all that dear, 6 quid I think it cost. There's a sensor built into the device for ambient internal temp. and relative humidity.

External sensor was behind a cool, moist plant pot. Funny thing is, the lowest temp was recorded inside the dry shed, -5.4°C whereas outside, next to the moist pot, it only got to -4.3°C. But the met office station, which presumably isn't in a frost pocket, only hit -3°C . So the external still air temp in the close vicinity must have got to -6°C or better, the point being that was never forecast.

I was wondering why the tips of some plants were turning brown, and all my basil died at once back in october  :? this is the most likely reason... we had a few still clear nights, but none with (reported or forecast) frost.
