Confused Strawberries
« on: October 28, 2014, 12:12 »
I cut back my strawberries a few weeks ago to tidy them up and as it's quite warm, they've grown back fairly strongly. They've even flowered again. This got me to thinking, if I cut them back earlier in the year, could I get a second, autumn crop from them. What do people think?

In my very limited experience, as I have summer fruiting strawberries, there's not too many pollinators around just now (maybe do it by hand?) and the days are getting shorter for berry growth....

I have about 500 or so strawb's and I think maybe I have a few Autumn one's but I cut the flowers off to encourage runners to build up my stocks.

I'd love to hear from any Autumn strawb' growers.

I've got a few on my "Alice" which are earlyish summer normally. I don't expect them to ripen and those which have turned slightly red have been had by the slugs.

I had loads of fruit left on my Finesse everbearers, but a lot were rotting and not ripening to a good flavour due to the damp colder weather, so I removed them all. I think strawbs need a good bit of sun to be worth eating.

I've noticed my ever-bearing Alpine strawberries are still producing fruit.

I don't think a June-bearing variety, cut back after fruiting, would produce a second flush of fruit. Seems to me that would only inhibit the growth of runner plants.
Cutting back an ever-bearing variety would likely slow down the plant's progress since ever-bearers are supposed to fruit over a long season, cutting them back in the middle of this process would likely do more harm than good as the plant would then have to regrow leaves AND set fruit.

That's just my theory any-who.
I grow both June bearing and ever-bearing so I have fruit for a longer season

Just seen this.

Could we see strawberries at Christmas? Mild autumn weather means plants will carry on producing ...

My mara de bois strawbs are flowering and fruiting as well as my Reuben blackberry which I only got this year, it is covered in flowers and fruit. I've also just spotted some buds on the pear tree that look as if they will bloom soon.

I have come to the same conclusion as LotuSeed. Treat your summer strawberries normally and ensure an autumn crop by growing alpine strawberries which crop continually until frost stops them. There are varieties that give you a fair size fruit.

Noticed a couple of flowers on my strawberries!  My wild/alpine ones are still giving off the odd fruit (I don't have many plants to be honest).  Guess it's the mild autumn we've had?
