Won't bore you with the details but in desperation we have sown 20kg of agricultural grass seed and the chickens are mad for it!!!  All I want to know is, is it bad for them?
We have the large area fenced off but they keep flying over it.  I've spent most of the morning playing the role of scarecrow

As long as the seed was not chemically treated the hens will be fine , they will also go nuts on the sprouting seed so your scarecrow duties have only just begun .

Thanks for that 8doubles, as long as the girls are ok I don't mind playing scarecrow it gives me more time with them, but will still moan to OH so he doesn't realise how happy I am, hehehe

Agree re seed should be ok. If you re-seed again and have a large area that the chooks cannot keep short especially in the Spring do consider getting seed especially for free range poultry. I wish I had! It has types of grass that do not grow long. This is better for chooks as long grass can get stuck in their crops. Don't worry though they sound as though it won't get chance to grow really long!!
