Can I have some advice on what would be the best vegetables I can plant in the next three weeks as I've just been allocated a large plot which had been cultivated until two weeks ago I take charge of it next week I live in the west midlands.and any other advice you can shower me with would be most appreciated.

If you are prepared to buy plants, almost anything can go in now or shortly: french and runner beans, outdoor cucumber, cabbage, courgette, tomato, lettuce, leeks, squash etc.

If sowing seed; beans, carrot, beetroot, parsnip, lettuce, turnip...

And more. Other posters will add to this, I'm sure.

I'd say to think about what you enjoy eating. We don't grow runner beans because none of us like them! We do however grow lots of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries as they're expensive to buy and home grown are so much nicer.

You're in a lucky position that you've got the plot at the beginning of the growing season, so if you get cracking, you'll have a bountiful first year.

It's probably best to ask for advice on specific crops - there's just too much to cover in a single post!

If it all seems a bit overwhelming, go for some big stuff that will help fill it up and not be too much to take on for a first year.

Squashes, pumpkins and courgettes are big plants that give a crop with little fuss.  Its a bit early for them to go out, so you could easily start seeds indoors.  Go easy with the courgettes as they don't store and a couple of plants can produce an awful lot of fruit.  Sweetcorn is another good one, as are beans - runner or french. 

If you fill a few big pieces of the plot, the rest will seem easier to cope with

Still time for almost every crop.... end of may - Corn, courgette and squash, all the beans (French and runner tall and dwarf) successional planting of beetroot; carrots; lettuce; spinach etc. + any cauliflower/ PSB / leeks etc that you can find in a garden centre.
