Burnt wooden pallets
« on: September 14, 2009, 08:45 »
I am just about to extend my quarter plot to a half and in my absence somebody has set fire to a couple of wooden pallets

I have cleared the large unburnt pieces but there is loads of charcoal (I don't do BBQs) still on the ground!

Can I dig it in or will it be detrimental to the soil?
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

Wood ash is not detrimental to your soil, in fact it can be beneficial as burnt wood forms potash.
Just spread it out and dig it in....
No probbies.....  ;)

Bear in mind that the pallets may have been chemically treated to stop them rotting, so there may be a residue in the charcoal. I'd bin it myself and I'm not an 'organic' gardener.
