Hi all,
On my allotment plot I have a compost bin which is made from pallets. It's about 1.5 metres square and tall. I've dug up a lot of weeds over the past few weeks and have already nearly filled it.

As the heap consists of virtually nothing but weeds, what can I do to ensure that it will rot down well? I can take the rest of my weeds home for now, but ideally would like to use this compost in a year's time. Is it just a case of mixing in some grass clippings and cardboard? Is there anything else I can add to accelerate the process?

Mix it with some fresh manure, or add comfrey leaves or pee as an accelerator. You can buy accelerator but I never have so cannot say how well they work. Remember to exclude the light or those weeds might regrow if it doesn’t get to high enough temperatures

I find dried chicken manure works very well sprinkle on each layer and water

I'd add some shredded non-glossy paper, egg cartons, coffee grinds and a generous dousing of urine as previously mentioned.
If you have the time and energy turning the heap every 6 weeks or so is a great way to get air into the pile and keep the composting process going at full speed.
