Late in September I purchased some Autumn Planting onions & garlic but did not have the chance to put them in the ground.  Since then there has been plenty of rain and now I am worried I have missed the boat.  Should I just bite the bullet and pop them in the ground and hope for the best or will they keep till next autumn.

They'll be fine to plant now. They won't save. If you're still struggling to get them out you can plant them in modules & plant in the New year

Yep. I'm still planting garlic as and when I can get out to weed and prep the area. Still got onion sets to do yet. Plenty of time.

I don't think you're too late, the onions will be ok into November and possibly longer, the garlic until December or even January. What I would say is DON'T rush to plant them in wet ground. It's better to wait and let the ground dry out a bit or you risk them rotting instead of growing.

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words of encouragement and information.  I am still worried that the ground is too wet and they will not germinate. However feel encouraged that others are planting the same things as I want to. I guess if I dont try I will fail.

Well that's very true  :)  The surest way to fail is to give up before you start  ;)

If your ground is prone to laying wet, planting the onions and garlic with a little handful of grit in the base of the hole can help.  When my plot was new to me and the heavy clay soil hadn't had much compost dug in, I did this and it worked well  :)

I "lost" my garlic crop cos the goats got in  :(  and ate all the tops off in June/July. Now they have shoots about 10cm high. I've dug a couple up and they are very small. Should I dig them all, or leave and hope for a bumper crop next year?

Was going to plant my garlic and onions today but very wet here so will wait bit longer. Grit in bottom of each hole sounds useful idea. Been told previouslythat using ?potash helps keep rust away. Wondered when you apply this? At same time as planting or later?
