will my wife and kids stick to keeping chickens?
« on: July 19, 2017, 21:02 »
i know it depends mainly on the individuals, but has anyone had any failed chicken keep projects etc, and how easy would it be to sell things on if they do get bored of the idea?

To answer your second question first, yes, theres always people wanting to snap up hens, starter coops etc.

Now on to the the first question... In my experience, no they wont get bored.
Hens arent just egg producers, there fantastic pets and full of character, consider them on the same level as a cat or dog, people love there pets.
I started just over a year ago with 4 pet hens, now I have 30 and there all ace!
Obviously theres the bonus that having a hen as a pet is more beneficial as to a dog or cat as they wont ruin your furniture.... and they make eggs!
Youll be king of the postcode with free range fresh eggs every day!

I know lots of hen owners local to me and not one of them has ever turned back since they got there first ladies.

Best of luck with your new hen project, if you need advice just post up here, theres more than enough experiance to ensure you have a smooth transition into the world of hen keeping.

On a side note, where are you planning on getting your first hens?  Its not to everyones tastes but I myself have 25 ex battery hens, rescue chickens as apposed to just buying them is incredably rewarding.

Very much so but be warned you miss them when they go .
Make sure the rest of the family realise they live relatively short lives.

Very good advice that, "Get 3 to start with" Mine are a joy and very well cared for. 8)

I did that and when I lost 2 I replaced them (Quite challenging that)  :D

However, they all seem to get on again now. :)

I think when you start you need to get into a routine and your birds will settle to this and understand what is going on and when. 8)

Free hens and equipment :D will not stay on your hands for long!!!
rip Sandy, rip Beryl, Henrietta

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol

I have kept chickens for nearly 20yrs now :)they are great pets and you get eggs to taste better than shop eggs.
I started with 4 just for the eggs, the i went on to pure breeds, you find you suddenly take to a curtain breed,in my case i keep going back to marans which lay beautiful very dark shelled eggs, most of the time they are double yokes bonus 2 in 1.
It is an addictive hobbie your family will get hooked,as long as they are well cared for good food, greens, fresh water at all times and wormed at least twice a year, keep on top of the red mite,in other words do your home work before going ahead.
You may even go on to hatch some chicks, very rewarding i have hatched many different breeds they are all different in there own way.
I wish you all the luck if you go ahead.

Not being funny about it , but, if you think there will be any doubt then don't buy them. They aren't toys and do need a daily looking after with poo picking every day and a weekly cleaning out. Would you have the same attitude with a dog or cat. If you need to ask the question you shouldn't have them.
