Year planner for your greenhouse - thread
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:19 »
Firstly I'm new really with greenhouses, and as it is my only growing space, I'd like to hear from the experienced users of greenhouses how to plan the years crops, what are the most valuable and of course what not to grow in the GH.
I realise that there will be many differing opinions, but I think it will be beneficial for those that are new to GH's, hope you agree and jump in.
Cheers
Best Regards,

What size greenhouse have you got? - it makes a lot of difference.

It also makes a difference if it is heated/frost free or cold.

Anyone willing to share their proven planner? I realise each year, personal choices and area is different but I'd like to get a feel for whats going to be needed and a time frame for sowing seeds etc.

Dunno if it is what you are after, but there is a Sowing / Harvesting calendar planner here:

Thanks Kirsten, I was hoping for something designed solely for greenhouse/PT growing, as thats really all the space I have, but its certainly a good guide.

Are you just looking at Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers, Aubergines, Melons? or also outdoor crops that can be grown under glass too such as Sweetcorn, Winter lettuce and so on?

I don't remember seeing a calendar for the former, as the number of crops is very limited they are just in-with regular Vegetable calendars, but for the later the sowing and harvesting times are different compared to those same crops if planted outdoors, so I can see the sense in having a specific calendar for them.

Kirsten thanks, the later options is really what I'm after, as I really don't want to have the GH idle just because I didn't sow seeds in time! there is much experience on here and I hate reinventing the wheel so thought I'd ask. The salad crops I have in the GH are really a bit late, but its surprising just how well they have come on, hopefully they will fill out some more before the daylight gets too short and their growth slows right down.

mumofstig I think that planner could be close to what I'm after, quite useful to me as a beginner with the GH, I'll give it a good read over later, thank you.

I know its a bit off-piste, but have you thought of bubble wrapping it as well as fleece?

Also, if this is all the space you've got (i.e. no outside space) rather than growing seed I would have thought you'd be better off growing plants, more expensive but you won't be using space to germinate the plants.

Finally, what's the wall behind you? Could you do some vertical gardening on that? Guttering makes a good space for growing alpine strawberries.
