Welcome to the site Terri  :D

I'm going to pop your post over to the Hen House board which is where the chickeny people hang out!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hello Terri,
welcome to the forum and henkeeping.  Be prepared to find it addictive and to want to add to your flock.  :)

You will need a feeder and a drinker
food - layers pellets and mixed corn
bedding material, people here have used wood shavings (dust extracted), hemcore, aubiose
little visitor deterrents - Diatomaceous Earth (DE), Flubenvet, Frontline
Purple Spray - (yes it really is called that though it is Gentian Violet)
Poultry guard and other disinfectants - people on this site have used Stalosan F and Ficam W.

Other members may come along with other suggestions; in the meantime good luck and happy hen keeping  :)
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

If the coop hasn't an attached run you will need to think about fencing to keep the hens in and the fox out, . They will need at least 2sq m each in their run.
With 5 hens laying you'll also need lots of egg recipes or an outlet for surplus eggs.
Good luck, you won't regret it.

Hello Terri, welcome to the forum.  :)

Will you be getting full-grown hens who are already laying, or younger ones?  If you're getting youngsters you might be able to put off getting some things until later (like the nesting materials) but you will still need the feeder, waterer etc.

Happy chicken-keeping!

I am just starting out as well :) and found that a small shovel for poop and a poop container is also useful.

We have four Columbian black tails they are a hybrid from the Rhode Island Red and the Light sussex.

We talk to them a lot and handle as much as we can without spooking them to much. They now have no fear!

Enjoy :)

  You know in all the advice I've ever read on here, I don't think anyone has mentioned that you need an egg cup!

Actually shot glasses make excellent egg cups and that's what we used for years.  But just recently I have invested in a set of six actual egg cups.  It will be a very special day when we use them for our very own eggs.
