Got several pumpkins coming along ok, but the leaves have a whitey mold colour to them. Is this a bad sign? The other folks pumpkins dont have it. :(

Probably powdery mildew,it seems to be hitting early this year(weather!!).Try spraying with milk and water,1:10,it won`t get rid ofit but will prevent it getting worse, you could also take off a few of the worst affected leaves.

Dry soil.  Have you been watering plenty / regularly?

Not as much as I should have WG on both accounts. I made a raised bed about 2 foot high x 3ft x 4ft and filled it with a mix of soil, compost and horse manure. It does still feel quite fluffy to the touch and I can see why it would dry out very quickly.
