Something Strange is Growing......

...................at the bottom of my ickle apple tree....

Any ideas on what this might be and whether I need to take any action?

Have you discounted apple canker?

No Argyllie. I'll have a look in the interweb for some pictures. Is it bad? 

It looks like shoots growing from the rootstock.

Has there been any damage to the bark ?  Rabbits, strimmer, bump from a garden tool etc. ?

it looks as if the new growths are coming from the rootstock....the bump in the trunk above is the grafting scar.

If that is so, then you need to remove any growth from below it

Remove the area with a sharp knife and treat with tree pruning paint of some kind.
