Welcome to "The Show"
« on: August 09, 2010, 20:11 »
Well here it is, as requested and aimed specifically at those of us who want to show our veg.  (No sniggering at the back)

If you have no interest in showing or have negative opinions about showing then this is not the place for you.  Please don't post here.

I've never entered any competitions before but want to help my local community as I had a fantastic time at the village show yesterday.  It also helps that I learned that my uncle
Bernard does all the judging locally. ;)

Keep it fun, enjoy the challenge and for goodness sake don't take it too seriously. :)

Cheese makes everything better.

i think it also depends if its NVS or just a local friendly thing

dont get me wrong I grow my veg to eat just like everyone else but now and again a lovely little fruit or veg comes and its so nice if you do get a little bit of recognition . by the way at the oswestry show if you enter 5 or 6 different things you get free entry ,entrance is £10 normally so the wife and i enter and the kids get in free and we park the car with the vip,s so it makes it a cheap day out the kids love it and I get to chat with andrew jones who is a close friend of medwyns and certainly grows some fantastic veg here are is onions next to mine ,i dont have to tell you which are his lol

Thanks philskin.  :)

I'll contact my uncle and get some advice if I can.  Don't know him that well but we both love to grow veg so we have something in common to talk about.

I believe that beetroot and carrots have  4"of  foliage left on in some shows

The rules seem to vary with each show which is nice in my opinion.  It would be awful if it were all standardised and sanitised.

Instead of having one rather long thread, it would be easier if people started their own topics.  Just makes it easier to read through.  Thanks. :)

Good thread Ice.

Our show is on Saturday but I'm camping in the New Forest over the weekend.

However, Helen, the chairman's wife, is going to put my produce out for me.

It's not serious but there are nice cups to be won etc like best gardener. The produce is than' auctioned' off.

I'm showing about 18/20 items if all goes well and have high hopes for my carrots/snips and squash. I'll get some pics on here when my stuff is prepared.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Lovely thread, thankyou Ice.  I entered our Village Show one year with a quiche and the comment was 'your pastry is so short I'm surprised you managed to roll it out'.  If the Judge knew how much squidging I had to do to line the flan tin they would have known I didn't roll anything!
