Brussel sprouts
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:30 »
Hi, this year i'm going to have a go at growing some brussel sprouts, But the problem is i havent got clue how you grow em??? I've read some books and they say to sow in march but ive read about starting them off indoors in modules

Is that right, and if so when do I sow them?

Also i know, brassicas like lime.

Me.......

Mid March, seed tray inserts, one seed to a cell. (20 per half-seed tray). Cold Greenhouse.

Transplant to 3" pots when they have 2 true leaves.

Harden off & plant out when about 6" high in really firm ground.

Take all neccessary precautions against butterflies & pigeons!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD's right. Even though mine were still at home hidden amongst all sorts the butterflys found them and the caterpillers descimated them.  No sprouts (kale or broccoli) for me this year.  Every day I found more and more caterpillars hiding on the stalks.  Grrr

Too true - my OH found it incredibly amusing as I ran round the garden chasing butterflies like a lunatic!
For the latest on the BIG project, read my blog.

I think you start them now if you want early sprouts this autumn.  If you want ones for Christmas or later, start them in March.

Better tasting later on,  when they've had the frost & (some of) the whitefly has been killed off!
