My Jack Russells used to love ratting, we have moved recently and at the moment the rats haven't found us, so they are making do with rabbits. You need to keep control of the rats as they breed really quickly, but with 5 cats and your terriers you should have not problem.

Rats love 2 things. Food and shelter. If you remove these they will move on. (all been well)

Try to use feeders instead of scattering food on the floor and remove the feeders at night.
Don't give them anywhere to hide. If it can be raised off the floor, raise it, if it can be trimmed, trim it.
What with this, the traps and the cats I don't think you'll be seeing more of them.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

they also love becks and dykes plus farm fields full of crops so some of us no matter how hard we try will never be able to get rid of them when surrounded by the above things, plus my closest neighbour has horses so there is also her feed stuff and hay bales. We just have to do our bit to help keep the population under control  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Rats also love compost bins, you will never get rid of them completely they just need to be controlled.
