WOODEN TO PLASTIC
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:30 »
Hello!

I get my swanky Eglu cube tomorrow - primarily because I had red mite in my lovely wooden one - and the little ****** have won!

Due to this, is there anything I should do to the new Cube  - or indeed hens prior to putting them in their new home?

ta.

I would get some ivermectin from the vet and make sure the nasty parasites are dead.  Dust all the joints, crevices etc in the cube with diatom too!

remember that any redmite that have been washed out of you old wooden coop may still be alive on the ground so can creep back into the cube. Therefor do as auntie says and dust inside the eglu too - the good thing is plastic is easy to wash and dry so far easier to get rid of the little blighters.
Staffies are softer than you think.

And get rid of the old wooden coop and all it's fittings (burn it or give it to someone you hate ;) )

Anything from the old setup that you intend to keep should be thoroughly sanitised i.e. immersed in insecticide for quite a time.

I did the same for the same reasons and it's LOVELY! So easy to clean, loads of room, well designed etc. and I dust regularly with Diatom. Took them a while to get used to the ladder and at first they slept in the nest box (it WAS winter!) but now they're all perching.
NO RED MITE! :tongue2:

main concern is the nest box.  There is only one - rather than there being 3 segregated ones in my old coop - and Betty thinks she is lady of the manor and commandeers all 3 (Somehow). We'll see how the weekend goes!!

Thanks as ever for advice.

The old redmite infested wooden shed.  Wood.  Never again.

Lovely new cube - with confused birds!
