Oh No! Disaster of not?
« on: March 22, 2009, 17:42 »
Hi everyone,

I've had a disaster today; after succesfully growing two cucumber plants that were doing really well, I,ve gone and broken the stem of one of them  Is it doomed to the compost bin or will it survive?

Its broken off just above the first leaf joint, do you think it will carry on growing fom this point?  I hope so as I only grew two.

My personal opinon is that it's doomed.

All is not lost as I haven't even sown mine yet, plenty early enough to start another.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh thats a shame, I will sow a couple more, as you say, there's plenty of time. It was doing so well too.

Moral - grow a spare!

Sadly if the growing tip's gone - it's shot it. :(

A lot of plants will produce new buds from the point the leaves join the stems.  I'm not sure about cucumbers, but squash will, and they're quite close relatives.  It's probably worth seeing what happens over the next few days.

I'm with DD on this one. For cucumbers once the growing tip is gone then you've lost it.
