Jeyes Fluid to deter slugs
« on: August 24, 2009, 10:54 »
Morning all... I saw some cans of Jeyes Fluid on offer in Lidl this weekend, and was reminded of a tip given to me by an old fella at our allotments. He advised diluting Jeyes Fluid in a watering can treating the entire plot during the winter (presumably before planting anything) to semi-permanently deter slugs the following season.

Has anyone tried this, or have any thoughts?

I keep hearing these snippets of wisdom but how does adding Jeyes fluid to the soil help anything?

Surely it will have been washed down over the winter so not deter much on the surface the following year and will have caused damage to the worms and bacteria etc that we want in the soil. Also if you dig the soil over to add manure, or simply prepare the bed then it is no longer on the surface.

Haven't tried it myself, but heard it was applied a couple of weeks before planting spuds.

Penance is absolutely right  :)

It has been illegal to use Jeyes fluid on soil for some time now, whatever an old boy on the site may recommend.  And I agree also with SG66 & Aunt Sally about its counter-productive effects.

Don't do it  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

So are there any legal and beneficial uses of Jeyes...I bought a can a few months ago because I remember my Grandad cleaning out his greenhouse with it, now I'm worried about using it.

It's a very effective disinfectant.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The main penalty would be the damage done to the soil and beneficial organisms.

The relevant legislation is referred to here
http://www.pesticides.gov.uk/approvals.asp?id=329

Don't know the specific penalties etc but it is a criminal offence which is prosecuted in the magistrates court.

i dont intend to use this stuff however i have previously as i never realised but never had problems with growing or with absense of worms ect,, and to be honest this year was one of the worst i have had with slug damage to spuds ect.. though i am going to use the nematodes things to get rid of the slugs if i can..

but its interesting that other sites are advising the use of this stuff for soil steralisation and some even say that it is used in commercial situations.

I have used Jeyes as a rabbit deterrent. I dilute it with water ( so it's still smelly) then squirt it in a thin stream from a washing up bottle.

However I squirt onto the stone edging to my borders, stricly NOT on the soil. It really works. Do you think that's ok ?
