Rhubarb leaved not developing
« on: June 25, 2017, 19:05 »
Hi all - back after a long gap with a question. I transplanted rhubarb last year from our old aollotment in Manchester to the new veg garden in Derry. The soil I have filled the raised beds with isn't the best but I have used bagged farmyard manure to enrich it and have been feeding with Miracle-Gro general purpose that I am using up.

The thickness of the stems is increasing, but several of the stalks have leaves that have never properly developed, and are browny lumps at the end of the stalk. Any ideas what it could be? I know we have honey fungus in the (very mature) garden. I'm hoping it's not that...

Don't know anything about honey fungus, but I would stop feeding & up the watering,I take it you haven't picked any stems yet? Raised beds are usually very free draining. Hopefully it will settle down & take off great guns, but still only pick a few stems next year.

The rhubarb I planted this spring has not done well.  It has been too dry even with my copious watering.  It has picked up now, but it was touch and go for a bit.  I imagine in a raised bed it would need lots of watering.  They are thirsty plants.
