Mysterious holes in indoor grown pepper plants
« on: June 16, 2017, 12:03 »
I have some pepper plants growing on my kitchen window sill.  I don't grow them on the allotment as it's quite windy and exposed.  However, recently small holes appeared in the leaves of one of them.  I couldn't see any bugs or anything, just tiny holes, almost like pin pricks all in a line like a trail.  As I couldn't see the culprit I thought whatever it was must have flown away, but now all the tiny holes have joined together and turned into big ones.  It doesn't seem to be affecting the development of the plant, but looks quite unsightly and it has begun to spread to the next door plant.  I often have the back door open in the summer so something has obviously come in and done the damage.  Any idea what it is or what I can do about it?

Obvious question but do you have a photograph of the damage?

The culprits are probably tiny little green catapilers (see photo) they start munching on the leaves and leave tiny holes that get bigger as time goes on (see photo2).
you need to check under the leaves at the base on the stem, thats where they tend to hide, stretched out so look like the stem, just crush them and keep checking every couple of days.

Thanks for replying.  Unfortunately I have a technical problem with photos at the moment as I dropped my only device which takes them and busted it's camera!

Thanks Aidy.  It certainly looks as though that is the problem from what you describe.  Even on close inspection, though, I can't actually see any caterpillars now.  I'm guessing that they must have turned into whatever they do turn into and flown off.  The newer leaves seem to be remaining undamaged.  I shall be prepared in future!
