Recent holiday in Lanzarote
« on: April 09, 2017, 11:14 »
Managed to purloin a few seed heads from the large globular cacti seen all over the place.  This morning I can see numerous fleshy sproutings on the surface of the soil.

Shame I won't be around to see them in their full splendour! :D

Cheers,  Tony.

I like to collect seeds/cuttings from wherever I go, as well

It's naughty but I can't resist

The seeds will last, but I can't think of a method of preserving cuttings for an extended length of time.  So ideas please!   ::)

I've finally been and gone and done it. Bit the bullet and thrown out all my out of date veggie seeds.  They just weren't  emerging.

 >:(Cheers,  Tony.

I take cuttings the day I'm leaving wrap the bottoms in wet tissue, into a placcy bag and into the suitcase  :D Pot them up asap back in the UK.

Doesn't always work, but it is well worth a try  ;)

Well done Klefti!  :)

I finally did the same a month or so ago - the tipping point was realising that (amongst others) I'd got 6 different packs of radish seeds, 5 different packs of rocket seeds, all out of date, some of which germinated last year and some didn't, but of course I've no idea which packet did and which didn't!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants, and plonk your potatoes in the soil.

I am also guilty on both counts ... seeds from abroad and out of date packets in the box!!!

I am sure that there are rules against the first, an there should be about the second really . Lots of time and frustration could thus be avoided

My mum used to do this where ever we went when we was kids. Stately homes used to get stripped of seeds all the time.

I've managed to track down the species (I think) to Echinocactus Grusonii.  They are now about the size of a orange pip and pink.  I have far too many so does any cactus enthusiasts out there like a few?  Maybe somenes kids would like them as they can grow very large but it takes 50+ years!

Cheers,  Tony.
