Purple Beech
« on: March 24, 2017, 12:00 »
Just as an update to my previous hedge help post, we have decided to plant with Purple Beech with a few Rosa Rugosa thrown in for good measure.

I was going to prepare a trench, fill the base with compost & then add the "diggings" and mix it with the compost so as to not have a pure compost trench.

Can anyone recommend a good compost to use. I was going to buy from the supplier of the plants but they only have one bag in stock, next delivery is Tuesday & I'm planting this weekend  ::)
The plants will be 3-4' bare root with rooting gel if that makes any difference. The soil is sandy with very little goodness in it.

Thanks

I would get bags of farmyard manure to mix with the soil, personally I can't see the point of buying actual compost to add to beds etc, too expensive & too light, just my personal opinion.

Thanks, when I picked the plants up, the nursery man said not to bother with compost, just use rooting gel & plenty of water, so that's what I did.
The compost he sells is proper heavy duty stuff, not the barren stuff you're referring to, I agree, a no no for this type of project.
Thanks anyway.

Mulching around the roots of your new hedge will help the plants establish... lawn mowings nice and thick, composts from your bin, rotted manure... all would do the job well, keeping the roots moist and happy
