Spud Blight - what about the soil?
« on: August 11, 2008, 15:01 »
The entire village now has potato blight  :x .

I have spuds in the ground and in containers.  The plan was to put the container soil into the composter is this a no-no now?

I was also going to grow overwintering onions when the spuds were lifted?  Is this also off limits or if not, what do I do to treat the soil?
Are we nearly there yet?

If you got spud blight in the container, then definitely a no-no in the compost bin. You never want to propogate any diseases. Hard to tell how long blight will live, especially with all the encouraging rain you get. Be sure to burn, not bin, all infected spud tops and mushy spuds asap.

No real solution to blight, only to follow proper rotation practises: plant spuds next year in an area where they didn't grow this year, and fresh bagged soil for the containers. In the following year, plant spuds in yet another area where they haven't grown for about 4 yrs.

Thanks Trill.  What should I do about the spuds that were in the ground, ie, can I grow onions sets and garlic in there over the winter?
