Blight spores cannot survive for more than a few days unless they are on live plant material. Pot cleaning and soil changing is good practice to avoid tomato eelworm but is unlikely to combat blight.

Blight spores travel on the wind. Early in the season they are most likely to come from potatoes that have been discarded on rubbish heaps or put into compost bins and are regrowing. Later infection will come from infected crops.

Tidy up your plot and pull out any regrowing potatos in heaps or compost. Look on your neighbours plots and encourage them to do the same.

Infection points further afield are outside your control. All you can do is start spraying when blight is forecast. Dithane is preventative rather than cureative and will only slow the spread once it is in the crop.

Which is why we try to encourage people to register with Blightwatch .

As soon as there's a hint of danger, out with the Dithane.

Not sure if you can register this time of year, though.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Only used the email alerts, but when I'm not on the plot I'm sat here anyway!
