What is that soil medium they are planted in ? Does it consist of a lot of manure.
I may have it wrong but the onions look as if the soil around them is a little 'lose'.

Having said that ours dont look a lot different to yours at the moment, except yours are more upright as ours got buried under a load of snow.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Just wondering if they are getting too much nitrogen. That would cause the growth to be less resistant to weather etc. Soil does look very loose - is it just on the surface; if not, try treading it down a bit.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

the soil is just compost and old manure at the bottom from the year before. Ive not used nitrogen at all with it. should I?

Thanks for the tip regarding the soil being loose.
I initially tried to press the soil down and tighten it before, but I read somewhere that they need to be loosen so the bulb will grow bigger.... is loosening the soil something I shoud do later on? or do you recommend just leaving the soil compacted rather than loose? sorry so many questions.. its my first time growing onions this year.
