Onions Bolting?
« on: July 09, 2007, 19:43 »
Some of my onions are forming heads, is this what is called bolting? And what should I do? I have actually nipped them off, but don't know if this is the right or wrong thing to do.

Eat them first since they won't store.  Pull as required since they will still put on some weight after you've beheaded them.

Normally onions don't bolt to seed until their second year, but with all the weather changes - up and down temps, too much rain and too little sun, some of the plants simply went into reproduction mode. As the others say, trim off the seeding head asap, let them put on some size and use them up first. They really won't keep long in storage.

Thanks all - I did plant them quite late, as I didn't get my allotment till the beginning of May. Glad I did the right thing by pulling the seed heads off - it was pure reaction.
