I think that the amount of back breaking work needed to build and fill all these beds you'd be much better off sticking with a conventional plot. Gardening was never meant to be this much of a chore.

barn brian the beds are so my wife can help as she wont be able to dig
the raised bed will help her
the amount of time aint an issue as i have all the time i need
as for filling them well iniatially they will only be 4 inches high
but will gradually get higher

Fair comment NGF. I'm not against raised beds but having gone down that route myself I wouldn't do it again.

With the amount of rain we've had this year. I guess the time invested in building raised beds will have been repaid several times over - has for me

I'm very pleased with my raised beds, for growing the Veg/fruit that I want to grow. But it doesn't suit every purpose. Things like rasberry's/potatoes/sweetcorn/sprouts spring to mind. then there's the crop rotation to consider. I am now starting to rip up some 8ft x 4ft beds in preparation for next years tats. So it is 'swings n roundabouts' I'm afraid

It's not just the rotation, but the space required for particular crops. With 1mtr wide beds your limited with what you can squeeze in, plus  with sprouts for instance, they require very firm ground.....

We have 9 raised beds (approx 1.2 x 2.4 m each) and the rest of our plot is just left regular.

We wanted raised beds to reduce weeding (we are both at work full time and have loads of other weekend commitments) and reduce digging (we both have back injuries). We do find them really easy to manage and now have that 1/3 of our plot under control with lots growing and very little weed maintenance required.

As people have said, raised beds don't really suit some things, such as potatoes and the plants that need firm ground. That (as well as the cost of building raised beds) is why we have only done 1/3 of our plot.

I'd recommend a combination. If you change your mind and want more you can always add them later - better than building them and then ripping them up again.
