Looked up some runner bean cutters and they seemed to put them into strips, a strange concept to me...


No, there's two different sorts. One is the sort you're describing, to cut into long strips. The other sort, the one I was looking at, creates the little French slices as per Aunty's picture.

I don't have strings on mine, though, cos I grow White Lady and they never seem to have strings at all, no matter how big.

Mrs Ball - if you could let me have those recipes I'd be really grateful. I do love piccalilli :)

So do I, but they are more tender if you string them, in my opinion.

I find the long thin slicers better for French beans than runners, and they work best after blanching rather than before.

I never string my french beans. Always leave them whole.

What a brilliant idea Auntie. Using the speed peeler would never have occured to me.

It is even quicker and so much neater. :)
