GROWING VEG UNDER CLOCHES
« on: March 02, 2006, 10:21 »
Hi John,
Thanks for the advice on moving leeks - pity but never mind.

A few more questions for you

I have bought a few nets of onion sets - should i start these off at home in individual pots or can i plant them straight out now or do they eed to be under cloches?

I planted parsnips out a month ago as it said it was ok on the packet but nothing has happened, should i resow more or will they come up eventually?

I have started some peas off at home and now in green house - can i out them out under cloche now?

Same goes for some more leeks?

I'm really interested in square foot gardening and wondered again can i plant things out now as long as its under cloche?

Sorry for so many questions but Im trying to get as much done as early as possible. If there are any other veg i could be planting out now could you possibly let me know - cabbage, carrots, a new cherry tree, chitted ricket potatoes??

Once again thanks

Dave

GROWING VEG UNDER CLOCHES
Hi Dave
When it comes to planting. it all depends on the conditions locally. Since we're bitter cold and wet here, I won't be planting anything outdoors for a week or two.
Cloches are good for providing a mini greenhouse over plants, raising the temperature and protecting against winds etc.
So, in detail.
Onion sets - hang on until weather improves, use cloche if you have one to get them off to a good start.
Parsnips - I reckon you will have lost them. wet and cold. They germinate badly at the best of time. Mine went in really late last year and did really well. Give it a couple of weeks, never mind what the books say.
Peas.. put your cloches up now and warm the soil a bit before you plant.

Don't be in too much of a rush, or you could find all your efforts are taken away. I lost all my runner beans in a late frost (mid-May), if I'd waited a week I'd have been three weeks earlier.

Hope that helps :)

Anybody seen a cheap source of fleece? Homebase sells it at 99p per metre (1.5m wide). Is this reasonable?
Thanks
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

cheap cloches

I keep all the kids coca cola plastic bottles and cut them in half - the top half where the lid was I use for planting in the ground where the tomato roots are so that water gets directly where its needed and the bottom halfs i use as cloches for little plants.

I got cheap fleese from homebase 99pence a metre and its the cheapest I have found.
