There are everbearing strawberries, which produce fruit slowly through the whole summer, and there are maincrop strawberries which produce over a 3-4 week season from end June to mid July. Which you choose depends on the time you can spare picking and your needs. Check a local garden centre for the varieties which grow best in your area.

Pests in your area are likely to be birds, mice, squirrels, kids, and bugs which suck stem juices (can't think of the name). You won't get much crop out of the first year but on the second year. drape garden netting over the patch before the berries turn pink or they won't make it to red. Mice, however, will crawl under the netting so you might need to hold the sides down with lengths of wood. Plant extra for wildlife losses. If you get deer there, then you'll have to build a proper rigid cage with chickenwire mesh. They'll eat the berries and the leaves.
