grow your own!!
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:40 »
Not sure which bit to put this in but I am growing my own..........  WEEDS!!!  I just love em, spend all my time pulling em up and hoeing them that I ve forgot what I'm growing!!!  I ve decided that I ll just cultivate a weed patch instead of trying to grow some lovely veg!!!
My dad keeps telling me Rome wasn't built in a day and it takes time to get things sorted but I think even he is havin a laugh cos everytime we go up there are even more of the blooming weeds than ever before!!!!  Just having a little rant,  hope everyone is ok and well and enjoying the weather!!!!

  I'm growing a weed patch too. I broadcast-sowed some nigella in one section and I couldn't tell a weed from a nigella plant so I just let it go. Luckily the nigella are tall enough above the weeds now that they should flower with no problems but I can't seem to untangle the weeds from them so I'll just wait until they flower, go to seed, collect the seed from the nigella and then hoe the whole thing
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

You rant away lisa, but I am sure there must be SOMETHING in the weeds worth harvesting!
Dad is quite right about getting sorted eventually - we have been at our plot for ages and it is quite easy to keep (some) of the weeds at bay now, if you do things promptly when they need to be done!!! Her history teacher used to tell her the way to hell is paved with good intentions and she has spent many years going to hell in a handbasket.

So just keep plugging away and enjoy what you can!

As far as the weather goes - she HATES this heat, almost as much as I do - and I can't undo the buttons on my waistcost. All this watering has made her biceps as big as a wrestlers and her arms hang down below her knees. He does help, though! Keeps filling the waterbutt with buckets! Luckily he is tall so his arms can afford to grow a bit.

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I am told the French eat Dandilion leaves as salad (has to be kept in dark before harvesting though)
I don't fancy Bindweed salad or grass soup however!

Eating nettles  .

Ugh, don't you mean Ouch.  :D    :D    :D

Just got back from my plot, I'v been fishing for five days, so it was "strimmer time" :D

I find, if you strim down to the ground in this dry spell were having, the weeds can't get enough water or food to re-generate.

Two strims and there gone. 8)

We eat nettles like spinnach. If they are too old they are gritty but the young shoots are delicious. We also made nettle gnochi like hugh did. Lovely. :D
