Probably a silly question...

In the first inch or so of soil I keep finding 2 types of beastie. I'm just wondering what they are and should I be removing them. Currently I'm taking them out and laying them on a path for the birds/nature to deal with. I'm sure they're just a stage of something I know well.

Beastie 1 - largish grey maggot/grub, about 0.5"-1" long
Beastie 2 - looks like a reddish/black cocoon, almost like overlapping leaves, again about 0.5" long

Beastie 1 : leatherjackets (daddy long legs larvae) : http://www.bayercropscience.co.uk/pdfs/leatherjacket%20125350.jpg - they aren't always as dark as that one

Beastie 2 : probably moth pupae of some kind : See http://www.ukleps.org/Comnames.html  There are too many possibilities for me but check - for example - the second last picture for the Cabbage Moth.  Is that the sort of thing you are finding?

Thanks, both look very familiar!

The moth pupae makes sense as I'm finding it roughly where I had purple sprouting last winter and the leaves had been heavily feasted upon. I've also been finding the odd green caterpillar. So now I know where they come from & go to.
